NEW YEARS EVE (unless you're Chinese and reading this, in which case, who the hell are you?) Today we woke up to a flat Tyre (despite being parked up for two days!) so we had to get our roadside assistance to come and change it (I know we should be able to do it ourselves, but we paid enough to get roadside assistance so we might as well use it!). It was still raining a little bit but we didn't let that dampen our spirits, so we met our friends Simon and Peter (the germans) and a new friend, Scotty (the Australian) and went down to the local lagoon for some swimming! We then cooked a feast together with all the ingredients we could find and got around to the important matter of drinking ourselves stupid! We attracted quite a little crowd by the time we left the hostel (Germans, French, Australians) minus a few Germans who had to be removed from the situation (with Louise being the only girl in the group she attracted a lot of attention which in turn caused tom a lot of bother) and then we headed to the clubs. After partying for a while we ran to the beach to watch the fireworks at midnight, hung around for a bit and then crashed out!
Tuesday 1st January
NEW YEARS DAY! and it was rainy! So we didn't do much today apart from go to the lagoon and then say our farewells to Simon as he left for Sydney and then off to New Zealand, where we hope to meet him later on.
Wednesday 2nd January
The sun came back!! Which was lucky as our Whitsundays trip starts on the 3rd, so we spent the day chilling at the lagoon (getting a bit bored of airlie beach now!!) and having some drinks!
Thursday 3rd January
We checked in for our trip at 8.30am, went and bought our alcohol (Goon Wine) and then headed to the boat!! The boat was beautiful with large spaces on the outside to sit, chill, chat, sunbathe or record a music video of the song 'On a Boat' by T-pain, which three lads did! We sailed on for a bit and got to know each other until it was time for some snorkeling!!! We jumped off the boat and swam around having a great time in our stinger suits (you will see pics if you have Facebook). We saw all kinds of colorful fish swimming around in the reef and even saw a sting ray (which made us panic a little bit, thinking of Steve Erwin!) We went back to the boat, had some drinks and dinner and more drinks! We then went to bed in our claustrophobic little private room, which was hot and stuffy and Louise did not enjoy it at all!!
Friday 4th January
We woke up early (i say woke up, but we hardly even fell asleep to start with!) and headed straight to Whitsunday Island. We walked to the lookout which is where photographers take pictures for postcards and then headed down to become part of the view!! We swam around for a while, drifting from the sea to little sandy islands in the middle. We went back to the boat and saw lots of turtles coming up to breath which was very cool! We sailed on for a bit and the crew started whistling and throwing meat off the boat which attracted Sea Eagles, who gracefully caught the meat out of the air! We then did some more snorkeling in a jellyfish infested area which was a bit worrying but turned out to be fine. A few people swam with turtles but we didn't see any but i suppose as they were so close to us we could say we swam with turtles??? We then went to visit an aboriginal cave where we licked the bum of a green ant to setle the argument of whether it tasted of lemon or lime... it tasted of ant bum. We went back to the boat where we were entertained by two cockatoos (or parrots or whatever they were called) who flew down to the boat for some food. we then had a roast beef dinner and sat around drinking and playing games. Then back to the claustrophobic room which was more bearable as we were more drunk!
Saturday 5th January
We arrived back to dry land around 9am, said our goodbyes and hit the road. We decided to get the tyre repaired as we didn't want to drive on the spare which looked ancient. We managed to find a local mechanic called Phil who had more beard than face. He took us to his house which was out in the country and was very interesting. He told us that we was an extra in the movie 'Australia' which he was very proud of, and his wife Heather, showed us the old fashioned car they owned which featured in the movie! we got lots of pictures of the car, their home and one of Phil! Just to give you an idea of the kind of person Phil is I should tell you that after the filming of the movie 'Australia' he was invited to Nicole Kidmans birthday party. Phil turned down the offer because Heather already had a roast lamb in the oven - now THAT is a man with his priorities in order! We found a place to sleep and ran out of gas while cooking, but two kiwis who were traveling Australia lent us their gas stove and told us they earned $20,000 each for three months working as shrimp packers (so don't be surprised if we head back to Australia with our working visas soon!!)
Sunday 6th January
Today we woke up early and headed to Alligator creek to do a 17km trek! We saw our first snake at the very beginning of the trek which was a bad sign (although it was a piddly little creature) but carried on none the less. It was a beautiful walk in proper wilderness. We passed wild horses who watched us keenly to ensure we weren't there to turn their babies into glue, waded through rivers (after much deliberation about whether the name 'alligator creek' meant there were actually alligators - there were not, fortunately!) and battled hundereds of FU@&ING mosquitoes who absolutely ate tom alive as we had just ran out of insect repellant. However it was all worth it because after we had finished scrambling over boulders and dodging spiders in the forest we reached the most beautiful waterfall! we had a little dip and watched the mini lobster like creatures swimming around, then headed back the way we came and had another well deserved swim at the creek when we arrived back! We then went back to our sleeping spot for a well earned rest.
Monday 7th January
We woke up today and headed to Townsville, which we found disappointing (as our Australian friend Scotty had warned us) so we headed straight to Mission beach which has a lot of cassowary warning signs! We had a relaxed day as we were tired from our trek the day before so settled down at a rest area which had warning signs for crocodiles! Bit scary when you get up to pee in the middle of the night!
Tuesday 8th December
Woke up to rain again but decided to go for a walk anyway. We drove to Behana Creek and did a 7km walk up to the waterfall. We also saw Walsh's Pyramid (which from what we could gather was just mountains). We drove to an old fashioned town called Gordonvale, did some laundry and went for a few beers at our camping spot, where a bright green spider tried to climb onto Louise's shoulder. It looked up at us with 8 white, puppy dog eyes (literally looked us in the eye), before getting splattered for being so hideous.
Wednesday 9th December
Today we went to the Crystal Cascades, which is another waterfall! However this one has some lovely little rock pools to swim in without danger of being dragged off into white water rapids! We then drove on through Atherton Tablelands (which is more inland) to lake Tinaroo, had a little swim and then went to lake Eacham which was absolutely gorgeous!!! We stayed for a while then slept at a rest area in Yungaburra, not too far from lake Eacham so we could come back!
Thursday 10th December
We went back to the gorgeous lake Eacham for another swim to wake ourselves up, then did the 3km walk around the lake through the woodlands. We then went for another swim at the lake where Louise tried to instruct me on how to dive properly. I couldn't get the hang of it so after much criticism i asked her to show me how it was done. So Louise took to the platform, raised her arms above her head, jumped towards the water and SLAP!! BELLYFLOPPED IT A BEAUUUUUUUUUUT!!! After rearranging her bikini top and regained her composure she tried again. SLAPPPP again! so she gave up and we decided we didn't have a future career in Olympic diving, We then went for lunch at a roadside cafe called 'Termite' - on the menu today; Battered Crocodile with Chips and Kangaroo Steak Burger. We found these ozzy delights quite tasty, if not a bit chewy, and swallowed them down quick and got back on the road. We then drove on to Port Douglas, had a swim in the sea (within the limits of the jellyfish nets) and slept by the beach (the hottest, sweatiest night so far - not enjoyable!!)
Friday 11th December
So far today we haven't done much, Tom got his head shaved at the barbers which is a big deal as tom loves and missed his precious hair but this haircut is more practical for travelling. Now we are going to get some lunch and plan the rest of our time with the camper van.
Lots of love to everyone! hope you enjoyed the blog xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
