We took a night bus from Quito and it was a quick 12 hours to get to the coast, we arrived in at about 7am and checked into a hostel in Puerto Lopez. After a few hours sleep we headed to the beach, nice but doesnt touch the Caribbean. Had some food and sorted out tickets to go Whale watching the following day. In the evening we ran into a kid we bought a ball off earlier and had beers and played football till late. Then went into 'town' for a few more beers.

Today we went hump back whale watching. It was a pretty early start and the boat ride was not so good so we tried to sleep on the boat for a bit. We were so lucky as we got on the boat with two decks so as soon as the fun began we rushed to the top. The whales were amazing, we saw so many different ones and when they swam away from the boat the captain would find more. It was hard to just watch them as our mission was to get the perfect picture! After we watched the whales for over an hour we headed back and stopped again for people to go snorkelling if they wanted to......Tom did but not a chance I was getting in as the water is freezing!! Headed home for a bit of a rest then out to town for the big S.American football game Quito de Liga against the brazilian team Fluenase. (Final of the South Americn equivalent of the Champions League). Watched the game with the lad and his family from last night, though repeated power cuts forced us to move venue a couple of times!

Hi, best advice on hostels is turn up and barter - especially if there are not many people about! There are quite a few with hammocks in the garden so fingers crossed for the weather.

The wale watching is great, there are loads of places to get tickets all along the beach. Try to take a look at the boat before you pay though and again, barter! I think its a bit of a lottery in the morning as they just fill the boats up as you arrive.

Hope that helps!
