So today we are moving on from Coff's Harbour and going to a place called Byron Bay, which is about 4 hours drive away. We aren't getting the coach until 5pm so we had the day to relax and get our final plans organised for the next part of our journey. We'd had a really nice time at Coff's Harbour, there might be much to do here but it has been nice to relax and spend some time at the beach- as neither of us are beachy people we probably won't spend much time on the beach, but we had a great time at Coff's. The coach trip to Byron was lovely as we got to the see the sunset over the huge Australian plains- you could move your head in an arc across the sky and see it change from blazing orange to pitch black. We aren't sure how we feel about going to Byron Bay- it is an old hippy town but we have heard that it has been taken over by tourists and teenagers bent on getting bladdered and high, so we're not quite sure what to expect. We got into Byron at 9:30pm and could immediately see how different it was to everywhere else we had been. There were about a hundred people waiting to get on the coach when we got off (there had only been about 7 even at Sydney) and there were touts everywhere trying to get you to stay at their hostel. We managed to find our pickup and followed him to the mini-bus which was packed with loads of really 'cool' surfer dudes and their sexy moody girlfriends- Tom and I stuck out like a sore thumb. That was our first experience of Byron and it didn't get much better that night. We got checked into our hostel and went to our room- we are staying in a 4 bed dorm room for the next 4 nights here. When we walked in we found a rather large and slightly out-of-it older woman conked out on one of the bunk beds muttering away to herself. Well we soon learnt that this woman was called Elka (apparantly she was a numbian princess in another life, but hey who am I to argue with her) and that she comes here every 6 months for a holiday. She didn't really endear herself to us as she started bossing us around as soon as we got there, telling us where to put our shoes, how to make our beds and having tons of her stuff spread out all over the room. Talking to her I got the impression that she would be your best friend, as long as you didn't say something to upset her, in which case she would probably pull you eyes out of your head. I think we both had our guards up with the lovely Elka. Later that night we also discovered that she snores like a trooper and doesn't mind filling the dorm room with her farts and burps until the wee hours of the morning. Hmmm, I wonder what the next few days have got in store for us....
