We have had a pretty quiet day today, we drove to a place called Oamarau to see some more penguins. However we couldn't recreate our good luck of the other day and we didn't manage to see anything today. So after a little look around town we drove on to our campsite and set up camp for the night in the TV room again.

Having had such a quiet day today and as we are leaving on Friday, we have decided to use this blog entry to have a short review of our time in New Zealand and to tell you all about the little things which we have noticed or learnt about while we have been here. We are probably going to sound really naive in this next bit, but hey ho! These are all the funny little things that have happened to us along the way so far.

-Well firstly... no-one can understand me here. On our first night in New Zealand the guys in the supermarket didn't even know I was speaking in English! Tom has had no problems, everyone can understand him fine. But whenever I speak to a Kiwi I can see them leaning forward and trying to understand me and on a few occasions they have turned to Tom and he has had to translate for them. And I didn't even think I had an accent!

-Going around the supermarkets is a real experience here because things are a bit topsy turvy compared to the UK. For example, orange squash is really expensive so everyone buys fruit powder which you use to make your own squash. Dog food is kept in the frides- I have no idea why! However, you can buy a whole saddle of topside beef for a few pounds.

-The fish and chip shops here offer slightly different fish than they do at home. Rather than Cod and Haddock think John Dory, Lemon Sole, Monk Fish,  Oysters and Battered Queen Scallops (which cost about 25p each)!

-Being in New Zealand is like being in a big game of Catch-Phrase... just say what you see. The names of rivers, creeks, mountains etc all reflect whatever it looks like. So if a river is big then chances are it will be called 'Big River'. If it's small than  it'll be 'Small River'. We have seen some great name plaques including Stinky Creek and Awful Hill, but our favourite is Wind Bag Creek. However we did see a rather interesting one today: Hankyspank Road. I wonder what goes on down that street!?

- Morning TV in New Zealand is hilarious. Crap but hilarious! It is full of half hour long adverts for 'Make Up that will change your life' or 'Shampoo that will transform your hair'. But the best ones are the adverts for gym equipment. They are the best thing on TV! They last about 30 mins and show people in tiny clothes getting their arses shaken away by a big vibrating chair or getting a six pack by moving side to side on a weird rowing machine. They are funny because they are so gratuitous and have no problem with showing a close up of some woman's bum jiggling around at the gym.
