Guilty! I opted for the easy (and, in my defense: much cheaper than individual) option to get to Cu Chi from where the Vietcong used to trouble HCMC during the American War from an area just 70km away. A tour. Uggghhh.
The tour guide was notoriously unfunny, but never failed to laugh at his own jokes (ala: "You know Osama Bin Laden? He also guerilla. Americans do not know where he is. I know! He is in Cu Chi now! Hahaahhhaaaahahaha!"). En route we had a stop at a handicapped handycarft factory (where ALL tour busses seemed to stop). A good idea, but why would I pay 100 dollar for a mediocre painting?
The infamous tunnels, traps and hardships of Cu Chi now draw millions of visitors every year, and it has developed into more of an amusement park. Laughing kids, moving puppets, cheesy sights, an old tank for tacky pictures (guilty, again), a shooting range where you can fire an AK47 for just a few bucks, and, finally, a tunnel to crawl through. It was nice, it was worth the $4, but it was nothing special and needed to be taken with a lot of humour. *shudder*! I know why I don't like tours.
