We had timed it perfectly to be in Koh Phangan for the monthly Full Moon Party, and April probably being the biggest of all since it is so close to Thai New Year and the Easter Holidays. The journey from Phuket was very busy as any tourist in Thailand was seeming to be migrating upon the island like some sort of religious passage. After a 6 hour journey we then had to wait 2 hours to be taken to the port before getting on the boat, same-same Thailand we guess. We finally reached our very impressive hotel at 8pm after a 12hr journey, feeling very, very tired and hungry. However, once we arrived at the hotel Hollie soon realised that her rucksack had been opened and someone had rifled through her stuff whilst it was in the luggage compartment below the coach. We have heard stories of this happening so we tried to prevent this by placing locks on our bags. Despite the locks it seems they can still get into the bags and luckily nothing major was stolen as our valuables were on us - but be warned after 9 months of travelling Thailand is the only place this has happened to us….and we went to bloody Mexico City!!!
The next morning we woke to appreciate the full grandness of the resort with its huge building complex and extravagant exterior. Although things didn’t quite much up as our room was quite basic and building work still hasn’t been fully completed. The place is also empty. All in all the hotel was very nice with two separate pools, a private beach, and a restaurant that served a very good buffet breakfast. You could tell we were still in that holiday mood!!!
That evening it was time to get ready for the Full Moon Party and it was hard to know what to expect, especially as our hotel was situated on the Sunset Coast, a 15 minute drive away from all the madness. But as soon as we arrived on the beach it become apparent that this was going to be a night to remember, or should I say not to remember!!! The beach and outside bars were rammed with about 30,000 people dressed up in neon clothing and body paints. Along the big beach stretched out about 10 bars, each with their very own wall of speakers blaring out the tunes from the mixing DJ. Some of the sound systems were as big as houses as they stacked up high and wide. Everyone was loving it, whether they were dancing on tables, bopping it about in the sand or swimming in the sea. For one night only we weren’t in Thailand, we were in Ibiza!
Now it was time to drink, and to get on the buckets. We found a bar that did Rum or Vodka buckets with coke and red bull, plus a Vodka shot for only £4. For those that don’t know, when I say Rum or Vodka I don’t mean you get the usual double shot of it, not even a triple shot, no, you get a whole bottle!!!! I won’t say how many buckets we had as only my liver really knows. After 2am the party was starting to get really going, although each bar we went to played the same songs, where’s Fatboy Slim, Pete Tong, Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, or Deadmau5 when you them him!?!? Apart from the slightly repetitive music we enjoyed ourselves by doing other things like riding the slide or participating in a touch of skipping, or should I say Death By Skipping. The Thai’s must of thought that it would be a good idea to get people drunk on a beach, then get them to jump over a skipping rope that has been drenched in paraffin before being set alight! It was madness to see heavily intoxicated people trying to skip and prevent the rope from burning them alive. I obviously wasn’t drunk enough as I hadn’t grown enough balls to try it, but god was I tempted.
After an amazing night the party started to die down at about 6am so we headed home still energized and probably wanting more, but there are only so many times you can listen to a remix of Fireworks by Katy Perry. Anyway, we got some much needed sleep and got up at 4 o’clock to go down the local pub to have fish n’ chips - the perfect hangover cure!!!

P.s. After 10pm do not swim in the sea at the Full Moon Party as it will be contaminated with wee as thousands of people opt to wee in it instead of using the limited amounts of toilets. Also look out for the drunkens having sex in it, be sure to give them some stick and maybe an ‘accidental’ splash.
