Hello everyone,

Wanaka itself is a town of little interest, but in the winter Wanaka becomes a big tourist destination due to the great skiing opportunities at Mt Aspiring National Park and the Pisa Range Ski Areas. During the summer Wanaka does have a beautiful Lake where you can do a range of water activities including sailing, fishing, jet boating, rafting and kayaking.

The Lake in Wanaka is rather special as it is home to several dolphins. These dolphins used to be river dolphins but then a dam was built and the dolphins are now trapped in the lake and have been renamed Wanaka's own lake dolphins. Luckily the lake was filled with enough fish to keep the dolphins going and they are still there today. So if you have time to spare you can go to the small bakery beside the lake that sells special bread to feed to the dolphins.....a bit better than going to the lake to feed the ducks.

During our time here it rained for two days so we decided to visit the Wanaka Cinema. An eccentric little independent cinema where you can either lounge on the sofas or sit in the quirky cars to watch the film. The best bit is that the cinema has an interval during the film where they serve homemade ice-cream, giant warm cookies, hot chocolate, beer, popcorn and pizza. Or if your a bit more peckish a thai curry! Wicked!
