We took the 1st bus possible from Tegucigalpa to Managua, the Nicaraguan capital. From Managua we took a collectivo (a bus that collects any one along any part of the road) to the Spanish settlement of Granada. You don't hear much about Nicaragua as its the least visited country in Central America so we didn't know what to expect, however, as soon as we arrived we knew we would love it and it could be one of our most favorite countries visited so far.

Granada is another beautiful colonial city with a peaceful Parque Central, a large colouful Cathedral and wide streets full of restaurants and boutique shops. For the first night we stayed in Hostel San Angel but as I have been ill my parents (Mark and Debbie) treated us to a gorgeous hotel.....with a comfy mattress and a hot shower 24 hours a day!!! The first hot shower since leaving Mexico! You don't realise how the little things matter. So mum and dad we really appreciated it!!

I imagine Granada is very much like an Italien town or village, where people spend their days drinking coffee and eating . As it was the weekend it was really busy with everyone eating outside along with break dancers and musicians acting as street entertainment. The atmosphere was amazing and we definitely could have stayed longer than three nights. During the day we walked down to the lake and the playing fields where it was full of people playing basketball, baseball and girls football. It is the first place we have felt really settled and safe....though since leaving apparently the surrounding areas away from the Parque Central are not particularly pleasant or safe. However, the town seemed such a social and relaxed place that we really couldn't imagine it being unsafe.

From Granada we made our way to Ometepe, a volcanic island situated in the middle of Lake Nicaragua.
