We went on our free walking tour of the city today. Our guide took us to 4 markets around Mexico City. In Mexico all food has a specific meaning and is symbolic to Mother Nature. For example, the North represents death so markets in the north sold cold products such as meat and fish. From the South, markets represent life so the products sold include fruit and veg. The sun rises in the East so markes sell products that represent the beginning of life such as textiles and seeds. As the sun sets in the West markes sell finished products and fast food. Our guide took us to the meat market where we both tasted grasshopper - which was very salty and crispy. At one stall we saw a skinned lion's leg which costs $80 per kilo!! The stall also sold tiger, ostrich, crocodile, armidillo, jaguer, ants and worms - all legal!
Once the our finished we went on our own walking tour around the Zocalo and Historical Centre with a random Danish boy from our hostel. We went to see the Cathedral Metropolitona located north of the Zocalo. Generally we are not that interested in churches but this cathedral had some really intricate artwork - definitely recommend if anyone is passing through Mexico City. See the pictures attached. We also visited the Torre Latinoamericana which is the tallest tower in the Ciy. It was impressive to see how condensed the City is from such a height.
