Left Hanoi in a rush an caught a bus from the local bus station to Bai Chai/Halong. The bus chucked us out in the middle of nowhere on a 4 lane highway, so we hired a couple of guys with motorbikes to drive us into town to a cheap hotel.
Checked into the Phoung Vi Hotel for 8$ with TV and hot shower. The owners tried to sell us package tours to go to Cat Ba island, but we really want to go there by a slow boat through the amazing limestone rock scenery. After walking around Bai Chai city and bumping into the staff of the hotel about 4 times we had the slight impression that we were being tracked.
We checked the tourist office for ferries, but there is only one going to the north tip of Cat Ba, so we'll take that tomorrow at 9am.

Got a taxi to the ferry port on Tuanchau island and arrived at 8:30am just to see a ferry half way across. The next ferry is at 11:30am so 3 hours to wait. So we chatted a bit and played cards. At 11:30am we were told that the ferry won't go till 15pm since there weren't enough people :(
We walked to the main marina to have some food in a posh restaurant which was suprisingly cheap and had free WiFi :)
