We found ourselves going to Honduras, instead of Costa Rica, which was not the original plan.  It seems there had been an "incident" in Costa Rica and they were suspending all docking for the time being.  So, Honduras... or, to be more exact, Roatan, an island off the coast of mainland Honduras.  We ended up loving it there and being so glad the change had been made.

First we we took a bus up to a ranch in the hills and embarked on a little horse back ride.  It was loads of fun.  We rode along a deserted beach, through some grassland, past some very expensive homes, and ended up at Tabayana Beach for some laying around and snorkeling.   It was a really nice day.  I'm not one for riding horses normally as I had, in my younger years, an incident of being thrown off one.  Since then I've been a bit skittish, but I was glad I overcame it and went anyway.  It was great fun.  I even galloped once or twice.  My horse, Emerald, had a bit of attitude, but we managed to get along OK.  Then, afterward, at the beach, we enjoyed a bit of snorkeling, which was fantastic to be able to do right off the beach, and also a bit of laying around and watching the water.  The beach at Tabayana was very pretty.  White sand, palm trees, and Caribbean blue water.  It's what you picture when you hear someone say Caribbean.

The other thing about Honduras was that the people were so warm, and so welcoming.  They are really trying to promote tourism there, and you can tell.  Almost every local we came in contact with was telling how great it was to live there, how cheaply one could buy property, and how friendly the island was to non-natives who move in.  They even made a point, several times, of telling us there was an international airport on the island and we could get direct flights from parts of the eastern United States.  I think we might go back.
