Day 7 - Eureka California to Prospect Oregon and Crater Lake

Day 7 and the bike trip Sout and West changed to travelling North and East towards home ... so far we've logged about 5000 kms ... 99.9% of them enjoyable.

The extra night in Eureka was a good idea ... a week of "flat-out" riding gets tiring so a night to relax, do some laundry, get to bed early helped.

It amazes us the people you meet when you are out on a road trip on a bike ... people go out of their way to say hello or just generally shoot the Sh&t.  Case in point ... we are loading up the bike this morning and a guy we never saw before in our lives comes over out of the blue (this is before 8 am) to talk about where we are from, how the trip has been, etc ... turns out he has a bike similar to mine and he was staying at the same hotel ... 45 minutes later we finally get the bike packed and we are on our way ...

Anyway, we managed to get breakfast and be on the road by 8:15 am ... first stop ... Crescent city or so I thought ... Michelle had to find another bush along the way about 30 minutes outside of Eureka ... what is up? (note from Shell....not like I enjoy stopping all the time but what can you do? when you got to go ...)

It was a very foggy start to the morning which I hear is fairly typical along the Pacific Coast Highway.  It stayed around 12 degrees all the way to Crescent city but we managed to get a couple of shots of the ocean as we burned by.  One of the things I had to turn around and get a picture of were these Huge statues of Paul Bunion and Blue on the side of the road ... just think about an anatomically correct bull that's at least 20 feet tall ... can you say prarie oysters?

On to Crescent City where the road turned inland and we climbed a few mountains and drove through a number of large stands of redwoods ... Route 199 from Crescent City to Grants Pass Oregon is a scenic byway but a very busy stretch of highway ... not what we were expecting.  Once we got to Grants Pass we stopped to check the GPS to make sure we were on the right track at a farmers market where we asked the owner who was outside arranging the fruit and vegetables if we were on the right road.  He pointed us to a back road that followed the Rogue River all the way up the Crater Lake highway ... a great drive.

We decided to check into the Historic Prospect Hotel which is a which was an old home built in the 1880s and has had a number of celebrities stay there including Theodore Roosevelt.

We made really good time from Eureka so we got checked in early enough that we could head up to Crater Lake and back before supper ... this was a bonus because it meant we didn't have to try to squeeze it in the following day.

Crater Lake was another one of those landmarks that you have to see to believe ... you drive up to it after twisting youeself up the side of another mountain and all of a sudden there it is ...

I'm not sure if the pictures do it justice but the colour of the water and the scenic views were something worth going to see to say the least.

Once we returned from the lake we had a drink on the porch of the hotel and went for a walk to a couple of the water falls in town ... topping the night off with a pizza from the RV park pizzeria ... it was actually pretty good!

Tomorrow is a mileage day ... Crater Lake to Mt. St. Helen's
