Day 3 - Riggins Idaho to La Grande Oregon via Hell's Canyon and the Hell's Canyon Scenic Byway

One word ... AWESOME!

This was by far the most scenic drive I've ever taken ... the scenic byways of Idaho and Oregon are living up to all the raving I read on the internet while researching where to go on our trip ... I'm already wondering if we can come back through this way just to travel the roads in the area again ...

Anyways ... we started out the day from Riggins Idaho where we stayed in the Best Western on the Salmon River ... this is a great place to spend a night if you are ever down in the area.  We got under way around 8:30 again after have some coffee, cereal, fruit and english muffins from the complimentary breakfast they provide ... it's quite good as you can look out at the river and the surrounding canyon through the floor to ceiling windows (30 feet is my guess) or out on the patio.  The whole building is post and beam construction.

Today we went from Riggins Idaho to La Grande Oragan via the Hell's Canyon Scenic Byway.  Awesome doesn't begin to describe the view. Hell's Canyon has the lowest canyon (even deeper than the Grand Canyon) with the bonus of the lowest road in North America...all twisty and crazy turns that run along the Snake River through the canyon. From here we climbed out of the canyon on our way to Joseph which took us through the National Forest. As far as we went down into the canyon this took us up to the highest ridge of the canyon. Miles of hair pin turns and switchbacks, a dream on a motorcycle. It is really funny how friendly people here are to the biker. Everyone waves or if we're stopped they make a point to chat. Most towns we pass through have 250-3000 people. (could be part of the reason..happy to see someone different). Here it was on to Enterprise with the wheat and herb fields (the smell was wonderful) and to our stop for the night. Never seen anything like it!!  No words to describe it, best to look at the pictures.

Which leads us to the only one small problem with today.....when we reached the end of the canyon road at Oxbow Dam it started to rain..and rain..and rain. Rain gear came out again and the pictures slowed down.....until the camera stopped all together. It got wet. REALLY wet and now will not work. Memory cards have hundreds of pic's from today we just can't download them. SO......first stop tomorrow morning is Walmart to buy a new camera. (got to love Walmart...opens at 6am!). Todd would like to note that as he was driving I was in charge of the camera....2 cameras...both wet. Not like I tried it!!
Pictures are delayed until tomorrow.

Tonight we are in La Grande and staying at another Best Western. Not as nice as last night but great all the same. Went to Big Mountain Pizza for supper with the local Terminal Gravity porter on tap. Yummy.
