Day one on the road

Well ... it was looking like it might be overcast when we left the house on Tuesday morning ... obviously we underestimated just how overcast it was going to be.

We left Calgary around 9 am (which was a little later than we were planning) and stopped at the Cochrane Truck stop (Humpty's) to put on the rain gear. It rained from there to Fairmont Hot Springs. At on point the rain and fog was so bad we thought we missed a turn off and ended up on "Da Rock".

There was one bright spot where a rainbow was over the mountains...not sure you could see it in the pictures.

Somewhere between Fairmont and Kimberley (Canal Flats??) we found the reason for living in BC. It went from being 14 to 27 degrees in less than 2 minutes.  NO KIDDING!!! We both asked if the other felt warmer at about the same time......weirdest thing ever!!

From there on the weather was great with exception of the wind. We stopped in Kimberley for gas, coffee and to get out of the rain gear. It is here we found out that the road signs are a little miss leading. Outside of Kimberley on the 95 going south there is a little sign that states "strong cross winds".........right before you cross a bridge that is 250 feet high going over a river with no shelter.
OMG!!!  At this point we found that our new comunication system worked wonderful and we could scream in harmony as the bike blew into the other lane and on coming traffic.  Todd says he has never driven in winds that bad. "scared the bejesus out of him". ( and a great laugh over a beer at supper). The ride to the boarder was breezy but warm.

Once across the boarder the weather and scenery was fantastic.  We stopped at the beginning of the Wild Horse Scenic By-way and between there and Bonner's Ferry (this was the staging point for the miners during the gold rush) we found an Elk Farm. There they were on the side of the road as if they were cattle....there were lots of them and they were BIG.  We know some of you would have been in your glee.

The roads were great and the drive to Sandpoint was excellent. Could have kept going......
Staying at the Quality Inn. Great room for a great price. Walked to a local pub....Eichart's ( Putting the fun in disfunctional). Great food, great Elysian Dragon Tooth stout, and great people.....even the live reggae  band was good.

Somewhat early night but really enjoyed the day. 600+ km's in the wind and rain can make a person tired...and then there is the stout.....

Tomorrow off to Riggins Idaho.
