Ben and Gemma met us at 12:30 and we immediately headed off toward the old part of town. The bus took us to the university. We walked through some pretty ritzy areas down to the Rhine.
Weather Channel predicted rain for most of the day, however Ben reckoned that the Swiss Weather Web Site indicated only 4% chance of rain. Weather Channel were wrong. It was a glorious sunny day and remained that way till stumps.
On arriving at the Mittlere Bridge, Ben explained that we were in Big Basel and over the bridge was Small Basel. Small Basel held an annual festival that Big Basel did not like so they made and hung up a face that shows its tongue to the Small Basel. The "Laellekoenig" (Tongue - king).
We crossed the bridge to Small Basel and enjoyed lunch on the river front.
At four locations along the river, between the two parts of Basel are River powered ferries. They have been running for around 150 years and are simple yet ingenious. We caught one back to Big Basel and by a rather scenic route hiked to the Botanic Garden.
the Botanic Garden of Basel is one of the oldest botanic gardens in the world. It was a great garden to visit, an opinion supported by the many locals enjoying the sunshine there. Some of the beds we liked we're the "five senses garden" and the Clematis collection, which was one of the few collections flowering during our visit.
Gemma had to return to Lausanne so we took a tram back to the station and bade our hosts farewell
