This morning I get up early to ensure myself a front seat on the bus.  There is another group leader that tends to take that spot and I decide that today is my day to enjoy it.  We are going to be on the bus ALL DAY, so I selfishly want to be able to have the view. She usually spends her time on the bus reading anyway.  I stake my claim to the front seat early, and I am certainly glad I chose today to do so because the drive through Austria is splendid.  It seems that around every corner there is a lovely little village with a church or a castle or both. The Alps provide the backdrop for our journey.  I feel like I am in a fairy tale place as we wander through the mountains on our way to Germany.

In the afternoon we stop in the town of Innsbruck, Austria. This is our only stop in Austria and I think it is an excellent choice.  In the winter time it is home to dozens of magnificent ski resorts and has been the site of two different Olympic events. In the summertime the snow melts and it is just this lovely little Alpen town.  It reminds me a bit of resort towns in Colorado, except here the buildings look a lot like gingerbread houses. From Innsbruck, the distance to Munich is only a couple more hours.  The youths request a movie, so someone throws in "European Vacation" which is just awful, but it allows us to see some places we had been and will be going. I guess that has some value. I confess, I laugh here and there.

The approach to Munich from the south is interesting in that there really is no slow increase in development until you are finally in city.  It is like, one second you are driving in thick vegetation, then the next you are on a city street.  It is very bizarre.
