Where I stayed
Dio's Guesthouse
The flight's to Thailand will go down as the 2 longest days of my life. I had been sick for 5 days leading up to my departure, fighting off a bad fever and getting little sleep. I thought that it was never going to end. Originally, I thought to myself "nothing can get any worse now, I will get this bad luck out of my way and it will be smooth sailing for the rest of my trip." Things thus far have not been so smooth....
The trip started very early for Mike and I as our flight was scheduled to leave at 7am. Mom, Dad, and I left North Battleford at 4am on January 7th. The flights were very good, but the longest period of sitting down that I had ever experienced. Luckily, the plane was huge and we were able to walk up and down the aisle. It was almost depressing when we had watched 3 movies and were not even half the way there. I struggled to sleep on the plane's and had the biggest headache I had ever had. I needed sleep badly! Finally, when we arrived in Hong Kong, we had a 4 hour delay so I laid across the chairs and closed my eyes. Mike woke me up frantically as our flight had changed terminals and was already loading people. So we raced to our new terminal and luckily made it on time. The lack of sleep had really caught up to us and we slept the whole way to Bangkok.
When we arrived in Bangkok, we headed straight for the backpacker street, Kohsam Road. This place is a 24 hour party and is very loud and busy. We tried to book in at a popular hotel called the D&D, but they were completely full. It was now 1am and we were basically walkin zombies and we were not too excited about trying to find a place to stay. It is Thailand's busy season for backpackers and just about every place in this area was full and not taking any more people. Finally, we were able to find a place. It was a wake up call to me though as there were no windows and nothing but a mattress. It had no blankets, the walls were like plywood and our door shook from any one person walking down the hall. I guess thats what you get for 200 Baht ($6 CDN).
Our first day in Bangkok was somewhat uneventful. We toured around the Kohsam Road area and jumped on a Tuk Tuk (basically a motor bike with a bench on the back for 2 or 3 people). We asked to driver to take us to a good Thai restaurant and this is where our journey began. They took what seemed to be half way across Bangkok and waited for us while we ate. After this they wanted to take us to a bunch of tailors for us to look at suits. The salespeople are very aggressive and will not leave you alone. It was a very long day of harrassment and we were ready to get back to Kohsam road to try and find a different place to stay. We found a place and were finally able to get rid of our backpacks.
Our plan was to meet up with good friends of Cheryl and Tracy Cook who live in Bangkok and manage the Marriott Hotel here. Mike and I left our hotel at about 6:30 for this couple's place. It was a great night and they were very good hosts. After a great meal and few bottles of wine, we made our way back to Kohsam road. It is at this time that my nightmare begins. We went back up to the room to change and I instantly noticed that my daypack was missing. I knew it was there before we left and I began freaking out. Mike searched through his bag and found that his Ipod and camera were also missing. We had been robbed...
In total we had collectively had 2 ipods, a camera, $500 USD, Mastercard and debit card and my daypack which had many other small things in it. It was brutal luck to have someone break into our room on our first day in Thailand, but life goes on and we will not let this get us down. We have booked a bus to ShangMai which is in Northern Thailand. I plan on going bungee jumping there and going on a few day trek through the forest. It should be a great time. Well this blog entry has dragged on for a long time, sorry for my rant. I hope all is well in Canada.
Until next time...
