Happy 4th of July to all USA visitors.  Today the ship docked in Corfu, Greece and my roommate and I trekked to the site of the old fortress.  The site was charging 4 Euro per person today so we decided to forego the fort and try again another day.  I still don't have easy access to funds until we return to Venice so I am keeping a tight watch on my few remaining Euros.  Walking around in Corfu felt like walking in a sauna today.  I was thoroughly soaked with sweat and it was 9 AM.  Imagine when high noon arrived how much hotter it became.  The temperature was easily in the 90's F and about 80% or more humidity.  My body is still acclimated to Wisconsin winters and Alaskan summers, and I didn't bring a bathing suit as I haven't had summer in 2 years, so it is taking a while to adjust to the heat, but the shade is lovely and there is an occasional breeze.  I do tend to splurge on Powerade as hydration in this heat is EXTREMELY important. There is nothing worse than heat exhaustion, which can lead to heat stroke.  Vacation would definitely take a down turn if that happened (heat stroke is dangerous to your system).  So in these hot climes make sure to always drink plenty of non-dehydrating fluids (sorry sodas with caffeine don't count cuz they dry you out) and rest if your body tells you to.

After getting back on the ship today we prepared for all of the great 4th of July celebration activities.  My job today was face painting - I face painted all of the bar staff and a bunch of children and adults and then they went off and did other activities.  I also turned one of our event staff into Abe Lincoln with face paint and a paper tie (he already had the suit and hat).  Another of our crew members was all painted up and dressed in a freshly tiedyed (solid green) sheet and became the Statue of Liberty.  The two of them traveled around the ship to pose with guests for photos.  After the experience they decided to find any sort of holiday once a cruise (such as the pumpkin festival in Croatia) to get dressed up for and socialize and get photos taken.  Hmm...pumpkin festival, does that mean bright orange sack dresses stuffed with pillows and green tights and hats...I think I'll pass.

Hope that YOU had a great 4th of July and enjoyed some fireworks.  Many of our guests asked if WE would be having any fireworks onboard and we informed them that we would love to, but thought that they might rather not have to test out the abandon ship drill for real :)
