Where I stayed
Finally some weather good enough to make the journey up to Rio's highest peak, Corcovado! The journey wasn't a leisurely one. After the frivolities of last night we were feeling a little delicate and didn't feel any better after a hair-raising trip on a very busy city bus. At the foot of the mountain we opted to ascend in a minibus and after a 30-minute bum clenching climb we arrived. As we walked up the final steps we were greeted by a gang of very friendly macacas (monkeys). We were so happy to see some jungle wildlife we almost completely forgot about the original purpose of our visit but eventually we pulled ourselves away!
Walking out onto the platform that surrounded Christ the Redeemer, neither of us were prepared for the view that followed. Rio really is enormous and from this spectacular viewing point we could see the contrast between the uniform rows of developed high-rise blocks and the higgledy-piggledy favelas (slums)
Day 6 - Beach day
Todays forecast... blue sky! 26 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. There was only one thing for it. We headed straight for Copacabana and bagged a good spot amongst the throngs of sun kissed cariocas. Travelling really is exhausting and we soon fell asleep despite the constant cries of food/drink vendors. We woke up a little pink so decided it was time to get some suncream. All day we read our books and people-watched, right up until sunset.
In the evening we jumped on a bus to Lapa, Rio's street party centre where cariocas samba away until sunrise. As part of Kelly's birthday present I'd promised her a meal in Rio, so we found a restaurant offering authentic Brazilian food. We ordered and for about £15 each were bought a very generous platter of flame-grilled steak, another platter of chips and rice, a delicious black bean sauce and a salsa dressing
We didn't quite make it to sunrise but crawled into bed at about 1am.
