i woke up yesterday and didn't recognize myself. my eyes were super puffy and had huge bags underneath them. it was scary and it needed to go away before my lunch appointment! luckily it calmed down before i met Chris and Monique Fallows. Phantom came up in the conversation as we talked about the work i was doing with the birds at SANCCOB and they were so understanding. Chris made me laugh a lot when he said he would always be sympathetic toward animals over humans. they actually see a lot of injured birds when they are out on their boat trips so they frequently pick them up for SANCCOB. they did say that the fishermen are very violent toward birds in SA. it's not uncommon for them to hear gunshots when they are on their pelagic trips (!). the big bad human strikes again...

i was really excited to meet Chris and Monique as they are some of my "heroes".  they are most famous for their work with the white sharks in SA, you know Air Jaws, the sharks that jump out of the water to try and catch seals. very exciting!   what i loved about them is that they still get a thrill from seeing a one ton animal jump clear out of the water right next to their boat. apparently they get more excited about it than their passsengers. seriously, some of them jump about 20 feet from their boat. i would probably have a heart attack if i saw that so close but i would love every second of it.

sadly, i'm in SA at the wrong time of year for both sharks and whales. still though, Chris and Monique are going on a shark trip on March 4 and i hope to join them. even if we don't see a shark, just being out on the water with them would be so educational. they have a huge passion for all the creatures we might see off of Cape Town. fingers are officially crossed!

i took the train to meet Chris and Monique and was so surprised that it ran like clockwork. the trains were clean and ridiculously cheap. it cost 8,50 rand (about 85 cents) each way to get from Cape Town to Muizenberg and from Kalk Bay to Cape Town. each leg was about 40 minutes long so i'm not sure how they make any money but it is the way that many people commute to work so i suppose that's why they keep the costs low. i was cautioned to take the train only during the day and to sit in a crowded car. i listened and it all worked out fine. why were some of the locals telling me not to take the train at all then?

the ladies from Aviva made plans to have dinner at Mama Africa so i met everyone at the restaurant in the evening. i was wondering how good the food would be since it's a very touristy location. everyone raves about it and i will too now. we had a seat next to the band so we rocked out to some amazing music while we all tried various African dishes. i couldn't bring myself to eat kudu or springbok since i enjoy watching them in the bush. i'm also not a very adventurous eater. still i'm very proud of my starter choice of crocodile kebabs with peanut satay sauce. the croc was quite tasty.  it's a bit tougher than chicken but it really does taste like chicken - i'm not making this up! i followed this up with a dovi zimbabwean - a little poikie pot with chicken, spinach and peanut sauce stew that was served over rice. it was awesome and i'm looking forward to leftovers for dinner tonight!

SHARKS, KUDU & TRAINS!
Wow girl, you are adventurous. I took that train YEARS ago - back in 1990 I think. It was a great way to get around for sure. I am glad you were safe and to hear it was clean.

Brass Bell is nice - I've never actually sat down there as it's always been too full. Popular spot that! Your new friends seem nice indeed - great that they're so into looking after the animals.

Now I confess Kudu is yummy (sorry) and so is Springbok. Even yummier is Warthog! Crocodile?

I hope you get to see a Shark on the 4th - and hope you're feeling okay. Hang in there, enjoy all you can!
