Today we've been exploring the cultural highlights of Georgetown and now (we're writing this in an air conditioned internet cafe) we're knackered! Last night we both had the best nights sleep since we first stayed in BKK three weeks ago. Since then, the mattresses in every beach hut bungalow or hotel has been as hard as a board, but last night, hte mattress was like a feather bed and after a late night stroll, we sunk into it and were oblivious to the world until this morning when we were woken up at dawn by the mezzuin call to prayer from the mosque two streets away! Grrr....
The rest of today has involved me dragging a semi reluctant Jo first around the lighthouse, then Fort Cornwallis, then the air conditioned museum of Penang and onto a chinese temple. We've noticed today that the exchange rate for the Malaysian Ringit is at 6.25 to the pound, so for every pound we get 6.25 ringit. Therefore our breakfast (a tea, coffee, and four generous pastries) cost us 1.40MR, so that cost us.....22pence! Wow! Anyway, as long as we've done our math right, it looks like we can relax a little about our budget and push the boat out some. The Malays here on Penang don't seem to be anti British or anti colonial at all as all of the older colonial buildings, such as the Queen Victoria clock tower, are very well maintained and even the museum shows us Brits in a good light as well as displaying the overwhelming beauty and wealth of the culture on the island!

Hopefully we will be taking a bus ride to the Botanical Gardens and Penang Hill tomorrow (Jo sighs!) and we'll probably spend a few days here in Georgetown before we make our way along the coast and around the island. The plan is to travel onto Kuala Lumpar for the end of March and grab a flight to Tokyo and visit Jo's friend Sian in Japan...all great fun!!

We heard from an English couple today that there's snow in the UK and the weather is crappy! Sorry guys...wish you were here!!Thanks to all of you who are bothering to read this blog, it's great to see so many hits, but I'm having problems emailing the guys from TDBC as well as George and Kriss at ECC, so please don't be offended because you've not had emails as the PTB (powersthatbe)won't let my emails through! Please do put on the blog any comments you'd like and let us know how much you're missing us (haha)

Hey guys
We are mortified at not receiving e mails!! Really enjoying your travel news, but could do with less jibes about Monday mornings and the weather!! Blowing a gale here and pouring with rain, just in time for the weekend. Wales are doing great in the rugby - you so wanted to know that. Anyway off home to enjoy the electricity, h/c running water and mains drainage! Enjoy yourselves. Jayne
