The restaurant and bar in the hotel had already stopped serving food, so our chances were not looking too good. After trailing around a couple of different places we eventually came across a little place called Mex-E-Go! This was not to be quite the best cuisine we had sampled on our trip, however it filled a gap, so we ate here - mainly in fear of not finding another place still open.
The next day we continued on our journey south, and arrived in Hervey Bay in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the car had still not given up its new smoking habit! It poured out smoke whenever we went over 90kph....
When we arrived, I spent some time updating the travelogue (probably about four or five episodes back down the line!) in an Internet Cafe. Back at the hostel later James had got talking to an English doctor who was currently working in a hospital in Newcastle. (Our destination for the next day). It was interesting to hear about his experiences in Australia, although I cannot really remember them as I write this about 8 weeks later.
While we in Hervey Bay, we managed to meet up with two of James' friends from back home. They were on holiday here for a few weeks. We managed to catch up with them and a couple of the guys they met on their Fraser Island trip, that they had just returned from. We spent a morning with them, mainly while James caught up with them as we walked along the beach. I had met them a couple of times back at home and it was nice to see a familiar face again! We soon had to head off in our different directions though, as Molly and Jack were heading upto Airlie Beach for a boat trip and we still were in a hurry to get to down south.
Our next stop was Newcastle, we arrived there late afternoon and checked into another rather nice YHA hostel. That evening we went to visit Ben and his family. Ben's mum offered me a place to stay for a few nights if ever I was homesick, which was very nice of her!
Later on we went out for a curry with Ben, at one of the many Indian Cafe's you seem to come across out here. The idea being that you pay for the size plate that you want and then can pick from the curries available whichever ones that you want to try. They are pretty cheap and the food is usually good. There seem to be many of these kind of places in Australia, some like this one, just on the road and there are also some in food courts. There are also some that do Thai or Chinese food, although the quality of the Indian cafes tends to be better.
The next morning James visited a couple of places to get his car looked at. Unfortunately they were all busy, but on the drive out of Newcastle we came across a garage that specialised in Transmission systems. Couldn't we have done with him a week back... He decided that the smoke issue was down to having too much oil in the engine. He checked this and emptied out a load of surplus oil, that was probably spraying on to the engine, in turn making all of the smoke. He didn't charge much at all for doing this which was great and it seemed to make a huge difference as there was no smoke coming out now.
We continued on our journey, today we skirted around the west of Sydney on our way to our destination Canberra. The story continues in the next exciting instalment...
I apologise for the lack of photo's in this episode, mainly none because we had been to each of these places before, please see the next episode in Canberra for some more.
