My first day of unemployment began by packing my life into a few small liquor boxes and wine cases and shoving them into a 2009 VW GTI. Pairing down your entire existence to a car-full of possessions makes you feel insignificant for a moment when you close up the car and stand back to view your whole life in one small space. But somehow, it's simultaneously incredibly liberating and exciting!

Going from a two bedroom condo in Boston to a bedroom at your parents' house in a small suburb where Subway is considered a gourmet sandwich place is ... let's just say, different. One day you're sitting on your leather IKEA couch watching your flat screen HD TV w/ premium cable, feet on your IKEA coffee table, drinking your local organic fair trade iced coffee from the coffee shop you just WALKED to in under 5 minutes - the next, you're sitting at the kitchen table eating mom's home made waffles and drinking a hot (now luke warm) coffee poured over ice that you drove 8 miles to get. The most walking I do now is from the upstairs to the downstairs.

I do not think I will miss Boston per say, but already have withdrawals from its bountiful harvest: fresh baked sprouted wheat sandwiches with homemade hummus, sprouts, carrots, lettuce, cucumber, onion and a curried ginger vinaigrette.... fresh organic fair trade ACTUAL iced coffee that is good and strong and cold before it hits the ice cubes..... an abundance of fresh, local, and organic produce and meat within a 10 minute drive (not 45!).... authentic al fresco mexican Pato with house made guac and chips... sidewalks.... people out and about past 9..... dog parks .... and dinner options....period.

Aside from my geographical and cultural gripes, it's nice being able to visit family in 5 minutes versus 2 hours. I will surely enjoy my time with the Harts and Cains whilst I'm a resident in Southwick again. I will be spoiled by home cooking, the lack of housing expenses, free laundry, sleeping in, and good conversation over a tasty meal and glass of wine. Not so much by the deflated air mattress Jesse and I share every night.

Two weeks from today, friends and family will get smaller and smaller in the distance as we head to the left coast. Instead of 2 grueling Mass Pike hours of traffic, bland views, boring mid state landscape, and various radio stations of either static, country, rock, static, or rap - it will be a 6 hour flight across country and a half hour drive to visit Southwick again. Perhaps one can be persuaded to escape the trials of winter, and visit us in the temperate SD climate we will soon call home...
