Where I stayed
The following day we had the continental breakfast which was the only type on offer. There were boiled eggs but they were cold. The management said they had a promotion going which gave us a free ride to Murano the island of the glass makers, so off we went. When we arrived we were given a demonstration of glass blowing which is a fascinating skill . There were some fabulous items on show for sale and in th end we bought a chandelier for our hall to complement the 2 we had bought in previous visits. The owner gave us a courtesy boat to Burano, which is the island where they make lace but also have lots of restaurants. We chose one on the main street sitting outside in the sun so we could watch everyone going by and once again tried the tourist menu but it was not as good as yesterdays. We walked around the town which is composed of different coloured houses and lots of shops selling lace goods and also venetian masks.
The boat back called every where and took ages so we dozed off until it dropped us off at San Marco. We then caught another boat across the Gran Canal to the church of Santa Maria della Salute, which commemorates those who were saved from the plague and dedicated to Saint Roch who appears in paintings holding up his tunic to reveal the swollen glands or bubos from Bubonic plague
Outside we walked to the end of the pier to see a white boy statue which was part of a nearby art exhibition. It was actually being guarded so that it would not be handled. When a guard was not around they covered it with a perspex box!
As we still had use of our ticket we caught the vaporetto up to the Rialto bridge admiring the beautiful buildings on the way. Time to stop for a beer before walking back through the narrow streets admiring all the glass ware and jewellery for sale. There is some really beautiful stuff to buy.
We bought some bottles of wine from a local store so that we could have pre prandials in our room to make life cheaper and as it had started raining we dashed around the corner into Frezzeria where there is a big choice of restaurants and they were all busy.
