After sharing a flight from Adelaide to Sydney with ex work collegue John Dagas, we finally arrived in San Francisco after a 26 hour flight via a cold Sydney and humid Honolulu. We checked into our hotel room in the financial district after 11:00pm however Bastille Day celebrations in the bars around our hotel were well underway by then so it was lucky we were exhausted from the journey as the partying from the bars sounded like they were taking place right there in our room.

The next morning, it seemed appropriate that we start the day in Union Square, a couple of blocks from our hotel right in the middle of the old Barbary Coast. (Wikipedia - The Barbary Coast was an outgrowth of Sydney-Town, the area at the foot of Broadway and Pacific Street formerly inhabited by the Australian immigrants known as Syney Ducks. The area was already a hotbed of prostitution and vice by the time the Australian immigrants arrived).

For the rest of the day, we jumped on board one of the open top sight seeing buses which took us all around the San Francisco area including over the Golden Gate Bridge and into a great little town named Sausolito which our tour guide informed up had the highest income per capita and highest average property values of any county in North America. While the open top bus was a great way to see San Fran, and the tour guides were a wealth of information, by the end of the day we were both slightly sunburnt and tired.
