I left Merida at 11:30AM this morning heading for Valladolid. As the bus pulled into the Visitors' Center at Chichen Itza, about 45 km before Valladolid, I decided to get off, hoping to be able to find a place to store my backpack, visit the ruins in a couple of hours and witness the so-called Spring equinox ... at sunset on March 21 (and the few days before and after), the sun lights up a bright zigzag strip on the ouside wall of the northern staircase and the giant serpent heads at the base of El Castillo, the most breathtaking structure at Chichen Itza, giving the appearance of a serpent slithering down its steps. I did just that...somewhat touristy and overhyped in my humble opinion...and then I hopped back on another bus in late afternoon arriving in Valladolid in time for dinner. I plan on spending the morning tomorrow walking around this charming little colonial village before making my way to Cancun in the afternoon from where I'll be flying home on Thursday morning.
