This is our 9th day on Om Beach in Gokarna. As luck would have it, our stay here coincided with Shivaratri, a Hindu festival that lasted 3 days and ended yesterday with the pulling of a gigantic chariot of sorts up the main street of Gokarna village by many devotees, local and Gora alike. Banana vendors did good business yesterday as their product was in great demand ... the custom during Shivaratri in Gokarna is to throw small bananas hoping that they enter the immense chariot. Successful throws are then coupled with a wish.

We are heading up to Mumbai (Bombay) this evening on an overnight train. Our original plan was to only spend a single night in Mumbai, but having just finished reading Shantaram, a beautifully written page turning novel (albeit very long) which is set in Mumbai for much of it, spending more time in Mumbai is a must.
