Monday was a travel day for us as we moved on from Utila against the traffic which was generally heading for the costa for Semana Santa. The ferry ride from Utila was so much more enjoyable this time since they put the large boat into service for this week, the busiest of the year. We made our way to Copan Ruinas, very well known in the Mayan world for its ruins. Copan, with its location being only 10 km from the Guatemalan border, made for a good break about half way between Utila and Antigua, which is our next and final destination.

Copan Ruinas is a small charming town with steep cobbled streets in Honduras' western highlands. Although much smaller in scale compared to Tikal's ruins, these ruins impress with their detailed and deep carving. In particular, the Hieroglyphic Stairway, made up of some 72 stone steps, with everyone of the 2,200 blocks carved to form part of the glyphic sequence, forms the longest known Maya hieroglyphic text and records the dynastic history of the city.

We'll be leaving Copan at noon today, arriving in Antigua by late afternoon to take in what we expect to be very special Semana Santa festivities for the next few days. I expect to post our final entry to this blog on Monday, April 5 ... hasta luego!
