Ghent... I never would have come across this place if not for Diana's daddy (Diana, our nursing school buddy).  Her dad worked there awhile back, and one night when we were studying at Diana's house, he told us all about Ghent and insisted we go.  I mean insisted.  There was no NOT going.  lol.  I have to say... if someone is that passionate about a city... I can't see any reason not to go.

At first we weren't too sure about it.  Our first sight of the place was pretty ghetto-y.  We were walking down a canal past run down buildings lookin for our hostel... Then Skeletor walks by us.  I mean... this guy's skin was pulled back over his face and I could probably name the different bones.  Just say no to drugs. Unless you're in Amsterdam.  lol.  Ok, I'm tired.  Anyway, so I was a lil wary of the place at first.

But then we came to our hostel and it is definitely on the "really-cool-hostels" list, 'cause it was a BOAT!!!  Bwhahaha!  It's also an Eco-hostel.  They're super into recycling, including the water on the boat, which ends up back in the garden on the deck.  The hostel was just really neat.  We were a lil worried it would rock (since Chris gets motion sickness), but it didn't really move at all.

After dropping off our stuff we headed for the Old Town to find Amadeus ribs- it was on the list of things to do given to us by Diana's daddy.  And THEN we could see why he fell in love with the place.  The architecture was old and beautiful brick with canals running everywhere.  It was a weekend, so the locals were out along with the tourists.  There was not one, but FOUR giant stone buildings one right after the other... at first I thought they were all cathedrals, but one isn't.  Along with an old castle, the Gravensteen.  We ate dinner at Amadeus- all you can eat ribs, hell yes.  Along with the all you can eat potatoes with CURRY BUTTER.  Who CREATED this masterpiece?!  And WHY has it not made it back to America?!!  UGH.  Chris still can't stop talking about those potatoes.  They were effing amazing.  After dinner we headed over to a bar called Waterhouse by the Beerfront- stop number two on our list of things to do.  Awesome lil bar with a million different beers to try.  Our first round was the "Kwaak".  So, most belgian beers have specific glasses made to accent the beer.  The Kwaak has the weirdest I've seen... it can't even stand up without a wooden support.  Apparently, if you drink it the proper way, it goes QUACK like a duck.  lmao, so of course we had to try this.  Aaaaaaaaaaand, we couldn't make it work.  Dammit.  Belgian beer has a pretty high alcohol content... there in lies the problem.  The drunker you get, the less likely you are to be successful at this quacking business.  Oh well.  Round two, was the most awesome beer ever- Delirium Tremens.  BEST.  BEER NAME.  EVER.  !!!!!!!!!!!!!.  EVEN NEATER, the glass is dotted with lil pink elephants.  My new favorite beer.  =)  Somehow Chris and I managed to drunkenly talk in the bar for 3 hours.  I don't know where the time went... good times.  =)

The next day we wandered around the city some more... in and out of the castle and stone buildings.  My allergies were going haywire.  Our boat is right next to a grassy slope... and it's no bueno.  At first I thought I was getting sick again (nooooooooooo!), but then I realized I was itchy, too.  So yeah.  We spent some time reading back at the hostel just to give my allergies a rest.  Then we went out for dinner at a Morroccan place.  We tried Morroccan food back home once and it was a total bust.  The place ripped us off.  The food we had in Ghent was amazing, though.  Two different kinds of couscous, and we finished it off with mint tea.  Delicious.  =)

So, Diana's daddy- we really liked Ghent.  Thanks for telling us to come here.  =)
