Just as I had predicted, the entire dorm started getting up at 6:30am. Sigh. By the time the last people were done getting ready, it was 8am, and I was no longer able to sleep. We met a couple American college kids, though, and chatted it up over breakfast this morning. They're both studying abroad, and the girl invited us to stay with her in Amsterdam. So that might be pretty neat! They told us of a nice hike they did the day before, so that's what we decided to do today. We spent five hours hiking up the river that runs through Zermatt. Most of the trail was on what's called the Matterhorn Trail, which doesn't actually go to the Matterhorn as far as I know, but offers some damned good views of the mountain. We were totally afraid the weather would be crap. When I had checked the weather a few days before, it was supposed to rain all week. On the train ride up, it was raining. When we woke up this morning, it was clear and beautiful with nearly unobscured views of the Matterhorn! The Matterhorn is a cloud magnet... there's always clouds swirling about it, sometimes blocking the view. We got lucky, though, because on our hike back there were a lot more clouds and you couldn't see the mountain anymore. The other cool thing about this trail, and many many trails in the Alps, was the presence of a small restaraunt smack in the middle of nowhere on the trail. It has to suck getting supplies up to it. Amazingly, the food and drinks were cheaper here than back in town. We both enjoyed a beer with amazing views of the valley. =)
For the rest of the night we plan on getting food... and then I'm not sure what. Probably walk around the town some more and check out the memorial and cemetery (it was covered in lit candles for Easter when we arrived last night- eerie and cool at the same time) for all the people who have died on the Matterhorn. Tomorrow morning we're leaving for Interlaken! Another adventure capital within the Alps... just a tiny bit cheaper. =)
