Ooooh, action packed and its ONLY the first day.  We are in heaven.  We thought Granada was amazing... this is a million times more amazing.  I wish we could live here!  I shall start from last night...

Last night was our last night in the jail cell hostel.  I took a few pics, but we mostly just hung out at the hostel, drank at the bar (in the hostel), and talked for a couple hours with other travelers.  I even got to try a drink called Liquid Cocaine, which I think we have back home.... except this version isnt a shot.. its a whole glass, and it contains a fair amount of Absinthe (I found the green fairy!!!!).

Anyway, this morning we set out first thing for Bled.  We hopped on the 9:15am train, and arrived at the Lesce-Bled train station by 9:45am.  The station isnt actually in Bled itself... its a good 6km outside the city centre.  We COULD have taken the bus, but I was so excited for Bled and it was such a damned beautiful day (very much like a Californian spring day, nix the raging allegies) we decided to full on backpack it the whole way.  Go big or go home, baby.  So off we set... and it was so beautiful!  Snowcapped mountains in the distance... our first glimpse of Bled Castle up on the rocks!  I loved it.

We made it to the hostel sometime around 11am.  So... I think the manager lady in Granada must have a twin, because we met her match here in Bled.  She checked us in, asked us what we were interested in doing, busted out a map, and showed us exactly how to do everything we wanted and more.  Hike to Vintgar Gorge?  Do it this way: borrow the free bikes, ride up to Zasip to the church at the top of the big hill, grab lunch at the cheap pizzeria right next to it, hike the trail towards the Gorge, actually hike the gorge (and if its not open, do it anyway; if no one is there, then no one can stop you), hike back around to your bikes at the church, and just ride back.  She gave us advice on all sorts of other amazing trips as well.

So, we dropped off our things in our hostel room (by the way, this hostel is awesome because it comes with free internet, free bike rental and free laundry), changed into some lighter clothing, grabbed a couple mountain bikes, and set off. Yeah... that's how in shape we are getting. We backpacked a few miles.... rode our bikes up the hill, and walked the last bit, another couple miles... did a nice good hike for a couple hours.... and the biked back to Bled.  And we still had enough energy to walk halfway around the lake after a good shower.  Anyway... back to day trip...  So we start biking towards Zasip, feeling free and in heaven from the absolutely beautiful scenery.  I felt like Julie should be twirling around in the meadows next to us.. singing about the hills and the music.  lol.  I realized pretty quickly we were on the wrong road... so then we biked across said green meadow and climbed across a creek with our bikes.  Then it was back to the biking and feeling free business.  We had to bike up a monster hill to get to this church, but the top was so goddamned rewarding.  I have NEVER eaten a meal with a view like that.  And it was some of the best pizza we've had this trip!  We just kept laughing about the sheer perfectness of this little pizzeria up on top of the hill with mountains and valley.

After that, we locked up our bikes to a fence, and then started our two or so hour hike.  We hiked downwards into this forest, and came upon Vintgar Gorge pretty quickly.  This was such an amazingly beautiful walk.  Its up there on my top 5 most beautiful places list.  The walk is along these wooden platforms attached to the sides of these rock walls above clear aquamarine water.  We don't have water like this back home.  I dont know why it looks like this, but its amazing.  We just kept stopping and gaping and taking pictures, lol.  After the gorge ended, we hiked back on the other side of the monster hill back towards our bikes.  Along the way we got amazing views of the whole valley.  We sat at this lil bench for a bit taking pictures... when here this lil "BAAAAAH!"  We're like... huh?  And this momma goat and this baby goat, on opposite sides of a fence, come walking up the hill towards us.  Somehow the lil goat got on the wrong side.. probably by slipping under a gate...  and then couldn't figure out how to get back over.  We took a ton of pictures- they were just hella cute.  We weren't sure how close we could get to them at first... we didn't want to piss off momma and get charge.  Turns out she was really nice... and kept wondering why we weren't offering her food.  lol.

After our hike, we got back on our bikes, road back down the hill (I road my brakes the whole way... I was terrified of skidding out), back into Bled and took a much needed shower.  Ahhh!  We hadn't actually seen the lake yet cause we bee-lined it for the gorge.  We wanted to make sure we had enough time to see it since that was my original reason for coming to Bled.  (I had put up a message on Thorn Tree Forum on Lonely Planet's site asking about awesome places to hike in Europe...  And a number of people said Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia.  ...Slovenia?... What could possibly be in Sloven-holy-crap-that's-gorgeous!-i'm-going!!!!!).  So we walked around the lake for a lil bit, taking pictures.  We plan on doing a more extensive hike around the lake tomorrow, up into the hills and castle above it.  Then we grabbed some food at a pub, and picked up groceries for breakfast tomorrow!

An awesome first day.  I'm in heaven.  Its the affordable outdoorsy heaven, even.  Tomorrow we're going rafting- it's stupid cheap here.  lol.  28euro/person.  You absolutely cannot beat that!  ::happy dance::
