We slept kind of late after our busy first day on the road, but wanted to get to St. Paul in time to meet friends John and Toni Wilcox for an evening at the State Fair, so we hastened to get on the road as quickly as possible.

Of course, that didn't mean we'd forsake a good greasy-spoon breakfast, so we made our way back toward town to The Curve restaurant, where we found a talkative, friendly waitress named Cathy just waiting to serve us eggs, Kielbasa and "American fries."

Finally on the road, we headed north to take the ferry across the Wisconsin River at Merrimac. It was a gorgeous ride, made even better by the fact that until a few minutes earlier, we hadn't even known there was a Wisconsin River.

After the short, but wonderful ferry ride, we remembered we'd left all of our refrigerated stuff in the refrigerator at the apartment, about 30 miles away. We returned to get it and luckily were able to get back into the apartment to retrieve our cold cuts, mayo and beer.

The lost hour behind us, we headed west toward St. Paul, stopping at a park in Wisconsin Dells (or as we called it, Gatlinburg Midwest) for a picnic lunch.

We had decided to make some time by using the interstate, but it only took about an hour of that nonsense to come to our senses and head over the Mississippi at La Crosse and take Minnesota's Great River Road. A good choice.

Making our way to St. Paul, we got in touch with John and Toni, who suggested we eschew the 97 weather at the Fair and eat dinner in their Lowertown St. Paul neighborhood. After a great dinner (which in Minnesota style included tater tots), we took the Toni Wilcox Tour of Lowertown St. Paul, which ended, to my great delight, in her (air-conditioned) Hip Urban Loft I've heard so much about. We got back to our apartment, exhausted, and slept soundly all night.

But we didn't make it to the Fair. Or did we? Tune in for the next installment to hear all about it ...

Not that I'm envious (I am! Toni & John, Hip Urban Loft!), but you do this and I purchase a crush masticating juicer. I ask you. Who knows how to live?

Enjoy the fair! We had a blast there a few years back. We got a kick out of all the food "ON A STICK!" Really, everything on a stick. Gummy bears on a stick, fried fruit on a stick, meat on a stick. Then we came across "Caramel Apples IN A DISH!"

Those crazy Minnesotans.

Keep on hastening (but remember the cold cuts)!
