Well I decided to head up to Port Douglas for a few days. While in Cairns there are a few more places north that I want to go and Port Douglas was one of them. My bus pass ended in Cairns so I was unsure how I would get to the other places I wanted to go. However, there is a shuttle between hostels up to Port Douglas (just over an hour north of Cairns) and then I found of the other places I want to go you have to go by tour anyway, so it all is working out fine.

The farther North you go from Cairns the more rainforest you get into. Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation (where I also want to go) is "where the rainforest meets the ocean." It is so beautiful. I was the only one on my shuttle so I just got to chat with the lady driving it and swap stories etc. Her and her husband run the hostel that I am staying at up here and it is the low season for them right now. Low is right. There is one other person in my room and I have seen a total of 3 other people at the hostel the whole 3 days I have been up here! The drive was beautiful and it is just nice to get back to the small town. As the gal put it “In Port Douglas we have no traffic lights and no fast food. And that's the way we like it.”

It has been very relaxing being up here. Not that I wasn’t relaxed before but I don’t know how to explain it, less going on. The weather has not been perfect, rain here and there, which has been fine. I have been doing a lot of reading, both at the hostel and in coffee shops. I also have gone for walks along the beach and up to a lighthouse, and I got here on Sunday in time for the Sunday Market, so that was fun to walk through.

I am trying to not spend money on anymore tours until I at least know there will be money coming in again at some point and how. But there was a cheep tour on a boat (The Lady Douglas) up the inlet for Crocodile spotting, so I did do that. It was raining but it was still great, in fact it might have even enhanced the trip. I was having a bit of a bad attitude because I have been so tired today and didn’t really feel like going. Then we started out and the guy said this is the worst time of year to see crocodiles so I was like “Great, we aren’t even going to see anything!” But we actually saw 3 different Crocks swimming, which the guide said it is very rare to see them swimming, so it was a great success. I am not on board with these guys though, I hope I never get close to one again. They are very creepy and they look mean, and they are! For no good reason.

Tomorrow I’m headed back down to Cairns. I had a lead on a fruit picking job from some people I met on the Pro Dive boat. So I called them up and they said they didn’t have anything right now but maybe in a week or two as it is always changing. Plus I think with the end of the month some people will be moving on. So I found a job at a youth hostel in Cairns for a work for accommodation. I won’t make any money but at least I will not be spending any money either. I also learned about GumTree which is AU’s Craiglsist. So I think as long as everything goes according to plan I will work at the hostel and apply for jobs on GumTree and keep following up with the farm work and do whatever comes first. So cross your fingers that when I show up at the Hostel tomorrow they really do have a position like they told me on the phone that they did. She asked if I had a license so I have a feeling I might be driving a shuttle bus, so that could be interesting LOL. The one thing I didn’t want to undertake in AU was driving, didn’t seem worth it. But I feel like I have been here long enough that the “On the Left” stuff doesn’t seem as weird as it did before. So we’ll see what happens. Phase two is off and running. I cannot believe we are already nearing the end of February, and on Friday I will have been here 6 weeks, WOW!
