The Slouch Hat

The 6.30 flight to Manila from Cebu required a 4.30 wake-up call. It was on time and we arrived at the Slouch Hat by 9am. We couldn't get into the room until 11.30 which meant we were pretty shagged by the time we finally got upstairs.

A couple of hours kip and we were ready to at least go out for a walk. A quick bite to eat at the Robinson's Mall while Tim had a drink in TGI Fridays. When I found him he was talking to a very loud American man who proceeded to insult almost all the minority groups..blacks, Moslem's, Yankees?, one by one...I indicated I was ready to leave before he ticked them all off.

We headed back about towards the Slouch Hat and I suggested to Tim that we should visit the Hobbit House for a beer.. He was a bit peeved that I hadn't wanted to hang around while he had another beer so I thought that might make amends It was mentioned in the Lonely Planet as a good place to get a drink.

We were greeted at the big round door by a little person who showed us through to a dimly lit bar with lots and lots of artwork depicting hobbits and their friends. The staff were mainly little people as well which was kinda strange but fitting with the whole atmosphere. The beer menu was vast...over 200 foreign beers available...and the menu tantalizing. We both chose the ribs and were not disappointed.

I wondered how politically correct or even legal such a concept would be in Australia with all our anti-discrimination laws. But as some of the many newspaper articles were quick to point out...the little people would probably be destined for a life of poverty without the job opportunity presented and the whole thing just seemed very OK.
