Just a quick one this time, to record that we were here.  There's not much to say about it.  We had a bit of an argument with the taxi drivers at the station about how much we should pay to come into the centre.  They were telling us the minimum price was 100 rupees and we felt that was too much for a 4km journey.  However, it was a small station with nothing around it and we worried if we didn't just pay up, we might end up stranded there, late at night, with no transport.  So, despite feeling we were being ripped off, and victims of a taxi mafia, we relented and paid the 100.  We often feel that we're being taken for a ride because we're tourists, and get quite annoyed about it.  We probably should try to be more sanguine about it because we're really not talking about much money in western terms (the 100 rupees for the taxi is 1 pound 25 total) but it's the principle of it - that they see the colour of our skin and feel that they can make something from us.  So we fight it as much as we can and get very cross when it happens.  This morning we refused to pay 10 rupees for a bunch of grapes because the (Indian) lady in front of us had paid only 4 for a larger bunch.  They didn't look like very good grapes anyway.  Humph.
Anyway, Udipi.  It's where the masala dosa (a crispy rice pancake rolled and filled with a potato curry, and quite delicious) was invented, and it's home to the Krishna Temple containing an image of the Hindu deity Krishna, which was (allegedly) found perfectly formed in a block of ballast.  What is very strange, and we can't explain, is that men are only allowed to view the image bare-chested!  Women however, are allowed to see him fully-clothed.  Very gracious of him.  (R).
Just to note that proceedings in the temple came to an abrupt halt the moment I removed my shirt and the visiting schoolgirls got sight of my rippling abs and pecs. Some fainted; others screamed and lunged for me. Not really.  Ah well...too many Masala Dosas obviously. (T)

fair enough
thats a fair complaint, but they know you have the money, and you would completely do the same thing in their shoes. also while you still do pay their prices (i know you sometimes don't have the choice) it will keep happening like that. In comparison with most people though, you sound like you are doing really well with the haggling! enjoying it lots but have only got to here so far! ant xx
