We arrived in Delhi yesterday morning after a fairly uneventful flight, save for the free champagne, but things got a bit more exciting when we arrived and discovered that our baggage hadn't. We've now been here just over 24 hours and still no word on our bags - the baggage tracing facility very helpfully tells us that 'tracing continues' for which I think read 'we have no idea where your bags are'. It's a real test, actually, of our ability to stay positive, because we really haven't got anything with us except the clothes we're wearing. So what was always going to be a trying day - the first day of a year away from home - was made much worse. We had moments where we felt quite down, but for the most part we managed to cheer each other up, and the highlight of the day was sitting in a roof-top bar at sunset, drinking a beer, chatting briefly with the owner and watching a typical Indian rush-hour street scene below, oh, and a wonderful swooping eagle. (R)

Our digs are fine. 'Deluxe', in fact. We're staying at Hotel Geet Deluxe in Ram Nagar (a few streets north of the main Paharganj Area). We've noticed that most places nearby seem to have a 'Deluxe' somewhere in their title. We think however, judging from the outsides of some of the other local hostelries, that this word has been hopefully substituted from the original 'Dirty and Decrepit'.

Despite the difficulty involved in making any sort of progress through the streets (what with the attendant cows, lime sellers, dogs, rickshaws, bikes, trucks, people sleeping etc.) we've managed to explore a fair bit. We made it to Connaught Place (the posh part of town) and then found ourselves slightly lost and in a less salubrious part - so we beat a hasty retreat by auto rickshaw. No sightseeing as such yet - maybe this afternoon (after we've given the baggage tracing (dis)service an earbashing and bought a new tee-shirt each - the person in the next booth keeps shuffling away holding his nose). Love, and bye for now -
