I was a tourist today. I took a tour of the sydney opera house, which was fantastic. The story behind how it came to be is interesting and tragic. Sydeny had a contest of what do do with this great piece of land on the water that was originally a tram yard. Eventually they decided it should be an opera house. They had a prestigeous world wide contest for archeitects to submitt their designs. Over 200 entered. Most were boring and typical. They were about to decide on a boring one and an American judge came in and broke the contests rules by looking at a design that was already discarded. It won and it is the design you see today. Once again, you're welcome austraila. The architect went way over budget and time, like $150 million instead of the original planned $7 million, basically because the structure was determined to be impossilbe to actually build after many engineering design attemps. On paper it worked, just not in the real world. But then the architect had a break through using spheres and it work! The government stopped paying him, however, and he got pissed, took all his designs, and went back home to denmark. He never came back to see it complete. He died in 2008, after winning the "nobel prize/fields medal"of architecture. And they now have an interior room dedicated to him and his son oversees current renovations to make sure they are in line with what he would have wanted. When it was opened in the 1970s, however, the queen never even mentioned the architectures name. Also people across the harbor were worried it was going to lower their property values orginally. Now they have the most sought after land in the whole of Austraila.

The opera house was beautiful, inside and out. It had purple carpet, so my brother dave would love it! Kate Blanchet has been there, Arnold S. won his last mr. olympia there, nicole kidman used to sell playbills in the lobby there, and mel gibson acted there before mad max. And before he was a racist maniac.

I also walked the sydney bridge, the old coat hanger, locals call it. You can see why in the pictures. And I had a beer sampler, or flight of beers, locals call it a beer paddle because they serve it on a paddle. Again, see the pics. I had it in the the austrailian hotel bar, the one where richard branson the owner of virgin one that bet from my blog story yesterday.
