After having family move to Indianapolis the previous fall, we were long overdue for a visit to their new home and surroundings. We bought a new car a couple of weeks prior, and were very thankful to have Sirius satellite radio for the 10 hour (give-or-take) drive. We headed west on I-64 all the way to Louisville, KY and then north on I-65 straight to Indianapolis. For the most part the drive was ok, but we decided on about hour 5 that we were going to try a different way home.

The drive around Indianapolis to Westfield (the community where they live) was actually a breeze. We were worried it would be compariable to a drive around Atlanta. The one thing that really struck us was how flat it was out there. It was to be expected, but after coming from Central VA at the base of the blue ridge mountains it's really a let down.

While there we visited the Indianapolis Zoo and went to the Brickyard 500 at the Indianapolis Speedway. We went to the track on Saturday for practice and got a lay of the land for Sunday's race. Saturday night their neighborhood had a block party & a neighbor told us that we should plan for hot weather. We packed a washcloth frozen over night for each person. We had no idea how much we would need them. According to our family that was one of the hottest days of the summer, and of course we spent it sweltering in the sun at the track. The hot weather broke enough on Monday for us to enjoy the zoo.

We took the way back east through Ohio and down through West Virginia which proved to be a much better route. We stopped off in Charleston, WV and spent the night to break up the long drive this time too. We don't know how often we'll be able to make that big of a trip by car, but we had a really great time.
