We are getting used to these early morning calls! 5am to make a 6:15 am train to Aguas Calientes. Itīs a slow 4 hour trip but through very pretty scenery through the mountains. Machu Picchu has recently been voted one of the new 7 wonders of the world and the Peruvians are very excited about it. Itīs even more stunning in person than it is in books. We had a nice stroll around the whole site which was flooded with tourists all trying to get the best camera angles. Most people appeared to be in groups but there were a few independants like us. Then we took the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, shunned the overpriced touristy restaurants and ate in one which was full of police and very cheap. The food sucked but we did feel very safe while eating it!
The train trip back was fun because they had a folk dancer in the aisles and a fashion show by an alpaca sweater company. What was really amusing was the group of senior citizen women all scrambling to buy the sweaters and ponchos after the show! We got back late, after 9pm and grabbed a couple hamburgers to take back to the room. Barely had enough energy for a hot shower before we passed out.
