About halfway to Port Augusta, in the middle of nowhere of course, a little piece of hose broke in the car.  So, we turned around and went back to the roadhouse we had just left.  This "town" was only three buildings with some ornery people lurking about.  Sam and Jaana got a room for the night and would fix the car later.  I headed for the highway to see if I could hitch a ride.  A girl at one of the roadhouses was nice enough to give me a plate of fries while I waited.

It was beautiful out there.  I sat on my bags with my thumb out until it got dark.  At that point, I pitched my tent out in the bush just off the road.  The wind was so strong it snapped both the poles to my crappy, $20 tent.  I still managed to get it up though and got in a few hours of sleep until morning.  It was freezing, but I stood there with my thumb out.  No one stopped.  To be fair, I could count the number of vehicles that I saw on both hands.  I managed to get back in Sam's car, but only as far as Port Augusta - I'd have to get to Adelaide on my own somehow.
