Pushkar is a very holy city. With over 300 temples built around a small lake surrounded by mountains and then a desert.
Pushkar meaning flower-hand is where one of the great gods of the Hindu religion dropped one of three holy flowers to create life. There are temples for nearly all of the major Gods so it makes for a busy place for pilgrims to flock to but also means there's nearly always a festival of some sort going on.
It's a nice little town, known for its huge camel fair in November.
We managed to get a room on a roof top over looking the lake, next to the Gandhi ghat. There are numerous ghat all along the lake, the waters are sacred so bathing and puja (prayer) are the norm down by the water. The constant sound of prayers, songs, drums and bells are a nice spiritual background to the place, although after 1 week of many sleepless nights and early 4am loud speaker prayers your ears do start to ring....
We were lucky enough to witness the festival of the monkey god "hanuman" on the ghat underneath our room...lucky or unlucky? we thought lucky at first but at 5am when all the noise and bells and chanting and drums were still going on we'd had enough.
Our 3 year anniversary on the 6th was a great excuse to get out of the lake area and stay in the Jagat Sing palace..very nice.
