My only reason for going to Zurich was to get my hockey fix and see the Blackhawks play a couple of exhibition games against Swiss league teams. The first game wasn't sold out, so I went to the box office to get my ticket.  The cheapest seats available were not cheap, in fact they were more than I’ve ever paid for Oiler tickets.  But since this is the reason I came to Zurich, I wasn’t going to say no.  This just meant that I would only be going to one of the games, which was fine.

So after paying a hefty sum for my ticket, I went into the arena two hours early to explore.  Turns out there wasn’t much to explore.  But I did stumble across a bunch of Blackhawks players kicking around a soccer ball for awhile.  At one point the ball came into the stands and I went to grab it for them.  Before throwing it back I should have demanded they let the Oilers win at least one game this year.  I did not.

I wandered back to the main entrance area, which is basically the only typical "concourse" in the whole arena.  There I found a guy in a Detroit Red Wings jersey who I had briefly talked to outside the arena.  We ended up talking hockey for a solid hour before the game.  He was a “die hard” Wings fan from Switzerland who watches all the games online.  He knew quite a bit about hockey, but he did think the Leafs were going to be good this year, so I couldn’t really take him seriously.

The game itself was alright, my seats were not the best.  There were plenty of empty seats, probably because the tickets were so incredibly expensive.  The HC Davos fans were sure crazy though.  Their soccer-like chants continued all game, even when the score was 9-1.  But the place went nuts when they scored their second goal.

It was nice to see fans there wearing all different NHL jerseys, obviously Chicago being the most popular.  I even saw someone with an Oiler jersey.  I did not, however, see a single piece of Flames gear.  This is probably because even the Swiss are smart enough to know that Calgary sucks.

Since I paid so much for my ticket and wasn’t going to go to the next night’s game, I needed to find something else to do.  After wandering around all day unsuccessfully searching for free wifi, I came across a bunch of posters advertising the Zurich Film Festival.  I decided to spend about 10% of the price of a hockey ticket to see Away We Go, the new movie with Jim from The Office.  Unfortunately this was not a film that had “talent present”.  There are actually a few big names going to be at the fest this year, but not on this night.  I give the movie a 7.5/10, it was not bad.  Jim had a beard too.  Beards are cool.

Zurich itself is an incredibly clean and rich looking city.  Which means it is not cheap, and thus I am leaving.  When I asked at my hostel if the wifi was free, I was told that “nothing is free in Switzerland”.  I’m determined to prove that theory wrong when I head out to another hostel in a smaller town in the Alps.  We’ll see how I do.

… Now I see that Chicago actually lost the second game in Zurich.  I think I went to the wrong one
