Wednesday was a travel day to Branson. After set up we scoped out the town and went to Wallmart to stock up on supplies. John wanted a waste pipe support thingie and some red duct tape. The grey tape on the scooter bothered him. While he was picking out those type things I selected some good travel food items. Things that would keep well since we have limited fridge room. But I did buy some chicken breasts. Enough for two meals - both cooked at the same time. The first one to eat for dinner and the second batch for chicken salad. Turned out that we didn't eat out at all in Branson. We spent enough on theater tickets.
The hardest thing was to decide which shows to see. There were so many. We selected 4, two afternoon and two evening shows, and the owner/operator of the campground helped us by making the reservations on Thursday morning. Since we are here in the off season, it was possible to get good seats even the morning of the shows.
Speaking of the campground owner, we really lucked out with this campground. We found it in the Passport America book so we got it for half price - only $17.00/night. It is well designed and roomy with nice clean restrooms, full hookups and fire rings. It also had wireless internet. The computer worked great. I am sure I'll miss this feature in the forests.

The first show we went to was "Broadway" at the Branson Variety Theater. It was what we thought it would be, a compilation of familiar songs and dances from all the old Broadway hits. Very entertaining. What we didn't expect was the tribute to veterans that they started the performance with. They played the individual anthems for each branch and asked the vets to stand up. When they had all the insignias up we all showed our appreciation by applause. It was moving for me but John thought it a bit hokey. They took everyone's picture as you walked in for the performance and had them available for purchase at the intermission. We bought ours and had it signed afterward. We really felt like tourists!

The second show was Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers at the Welk Resort Theater. We had the best seats just 4 rows back and smack dab in the middle of the stage. Although I wasn't thinking that I would like this one, I enjoyed it more than the others. The singing was great. They do some of the best harmony I have ever heard and I appreciated his references to God and Country. Much like the afternoon show he asked all the veterans to stand up and we all thanked them for their service to our country with applause. It was a good clean entertaining show. John was disappointed because he felt that Larry spent too much time talking and on the video portion and not enough time singing the old favorites that made him famous. All the shows have installed large tv screens that they use during the performances. Larry showed lots of old pics of him and his brothers growing up and some old videos of the same. The big disappointment of the evening was that they allowed still pictures and I had not brought my camera. They even hammed it up for the cameras after inviting them right up to the stage. I had thought cameras banned because of the announcement made at the afternoon show. :-(

Darren Romeo was our Friday afternoon pick. He is a singer and magician who is backed by Sigfried and Roy so we thought he must be good....and he was but I just couldn't get the connection between the songs and the magic tricks. Both were good but in my mind they just didn't go together. John enjoyed the show.

Our last hurrah in Branson was the Kenny Rogers Show at the Grand Palace. This was John's favorite performance. He opened with a comedian and after an intermission he sang an hour and 10 minutes of his old favorites as well as some new stuff and there was no reference to the vets. I thought the show as a whole was terrific but Kenny didn't steal my heart away from Larry. :-)

We left Branson heading back along the way we came............
