Flag of Singapore  , Sentosa Island,
Saturday, May 17, 2008

On Friday morning Sungchi and I met after breakfast and headed to the botanical gardens. The gardens were too far to walk so I we took the MRT (subway) and local buses. The gardens were beautiful and very tropical! It took the better part of the morning to make it all the way through....I got tons of beuatiful photos of flowers.

Inside the garden there is a famous orchid garden where they house several species of orchids. One section of the orchid garden was dedicated to celebrities where each orchid was named after a celebrity....I had to smile as they ranged from Margeret Tatcher to Ricky Martin :)

Sungchi wanted to see Sentosa island so after we left the gardens we headed that way. Sentosa island is a man made island off the sounthern tip of Singapore. Stepping onto the monorail I felt as if I was in a sci-fi movie as everything had a "futuristic feel". As we approached the island a soft female voice with a slight accent welcomed us to the island and we headed for the infamous Merlion. Merlion is a symbol of Singapore with the head of a Lion and the tail of a mermaid. The one on Sentosa island is very large and you can climb to the top of the head and see all of Singapore. At the top you can see all of Singapore, which is so breathtakingly beautiful.

Looking at the map of attractions we headed for the aquarium - which, to be honest, wasn't much. Although there was a tunnel that took you under the aquarium so you could see the fish swimming above you. On the way back from the aqaurium, we stopped to try the flying trapeze on the beach. What a rush! From the ground it looks easy, but I almost chickened out at the top (I made the mistake of looking down :)

After the trapeze we checked out the pink dolphin show which was neat to see, but nothing spectacular. As we waited for the show to start, we melted in the heat which made me very glad when it was over and we could move to a cooler spot. By the time we headed back to the hostel it was dark out and had been a very long day.
When we walked into the room we looked as though it had been hit by a tornado! The UK Frat boys were gearing up to go out and it looked as though they had tried on every piece of clothing they owned, discarding the ones that weren't chosen to somewhere on the floor...Sungchi asked me if all teenageres were this way and I had to laugh because I think they are to some extent :)

Anyway, the next day was my last full one and so I just wandered around the Arab quarter soaking in the sights, sounds and smells of Singapore's ethnic neighborhoods one last time. In the evening Sungchi and I headed for sushi on Orchard Road. The sushi place was unique in the we sat at tables and chose our sushi off a conveyor belt that ran by the table! Apparently this is common in S. Korea, but I had never seen it before!
