On the walk from the hotel to the Archaeological Museum of Chania, we passed three different sites of archaeological digs situated between regular houses in residential areas. The owner of a house would decide to demolish it, and underneath they found Minoan ruins where are now being excavated.
The head archaeologist at one of the sites came to the street to talk with us. She said they were trying to build a roof over her dig, but they were restricted by the architecture of the rest of the residential area. So they were conferring this morning about where to place the post holes for the roof.
Two things to squee about here:
1) An archaeologist on site in action!
2) Somewhere under the cement sidewalk, we were standing on undiscovered Minoan palaces!
SQUEEE!

undiscovered Minoan palaces?
Are you sure? Couldn't it be undiscovered Minoan outhouses instead?
