Elsewhere on the grounds of the ancient Gortyn site, we toured St. Titos Cathedral. Indy told us that Titos was made bishop of Crete by St. Paul, and the church was built from stone blocks in the Roman period from a more ancient polytheist building. I asked, "There's a book in the Christian Bible called Titus, after a man who worked with Paul. Is this the same guy?" Indy said yes, and word passed from student to student, and all of a sudden they were interested in this church on a completely different level.
As we took our pictures and explored, a Greek man came into a side room and lit a candle, crossed himself, and prayed before the image in the niche. Later we saw the same man putting his hands on an exterior wall of the church and praying. Amazing to think that this church is still the site of religious practice a few thousand years after Saint Titus ministered here.
