We woke up Saturday morning as we docked into the port of Heraklion (hair-AK-lee-ohn), Crete. Our charter bus took us to the hotel where we had breakfast, but it was too early to check into the rooms. Instead, we waited around in the lobby until everyone had finished eating and the bus was ready to take us to our first ancient site.
The students were exhausted. A few of them used the time to hook into their laptops and iPods (ah the study abroad experience of the Digital Natives), and others napped. Some of them had gone to the nightclub on board the ferry last night, and were dancing until the wee hours of the morning. Well, they tried to dance. They reported that each Greek song the DJ played had a different special dance to accompany it. All the Greek people in the crowd knew every word to every song and could do every dance move in unison. But for our American students, the only song they could participate in was the Macarena.
