Many stories remain to be told, but my flight back to Ottawa is scheduled for early tomorrow morning - I have sadly run out of time on this beautiful, teardrop-shaped island. Over the past few weeks, I have literally been smothered in Sri Lankan hospitality and kindness. Yes, I might have sat down at the computer between all the final teas, luncheons, and dinners, but the high heat and humidity have left me feeling a bit like a wilted rag. Thus, I will simply end with a few final photos that will hopefully convey just a bit of what it is about Sri Lanka that has meant so much to me.
As I sat down to post these photos, I felt the room vibrating with what felt like an earthquake. Yes, a friend has just phoned to tell me of the large earthquake that struck under the sea off Indonesia's Aceh Province, so the tremors I felt here in Sri Lanka were very real. Local cellphones are now ringing with tsunami warnings, but this is simply a precaution after the massive tsunami of 2004. Surely, after all the tragedy this country has already endured..........although the TV is now suggesting that the east coast might be hit later this afternoon. We can only hope and pray that no lives will be lost.
