Welcome to the blog for my 5th trip with Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity and my 4th trip to Guatemala.  My name is Rusty Dicks.  Myself, along with others will take you through our experience of building homes for Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity.  This trip will begin for me in Lititiz, PA where I am from.  But volunteers from all across the United States will be a part of All the Way to Huite.  We will gather shortly in Guatemala City, Guatemala and travel to the Zacapa Department of Guatemala.  Zacapa is in the desert region of Guatemala and we will be warm, hot and sweaty over the next week as we work in the community of Huite on approximately 10 homes for Habitat.

But home are only a part of what we build.  We also will build relationships.  Relationships with each other and with the families that we will work with side by side.

I cannot begin to tell all of you the difference that these trips have made in my life.  We do not realize the many blessings that we all have been given.  Even in these times of economic strife that we all have experienced in the last few years.  These builds make this world a much smaller place for all of us.  And it makes me realize that we all must do our part to help each other. We are called to care for the poor and the needy no matter where they may reside.

You will hear from many of us during this week.  It is my hope that you get different perspectives of what these trips mean to us and to the families we build for.  Some of us will be doing this for the first time.  Others have returned many times and in some cases to the same communities. All involved will be changed in some way by this trip.

And we are even going to have a special guest with us on the trip this year.  My son, Jacob and his class will be watching the blog closely for Flat Stanley will be joining us as part of Jacob's class project.  So welcome FS.  Be prepared to work hard.

So welcome aboard!  And enjoy our trip.  And watch God in action through others as he changes the lives of his people.

Thank you Debi from Easton. This is Rusty. I am just getting the last of the suitcase packed up tomorrow. And my team heads to Baltimore to stay overnight in a hotel near BWI for the night for our 6am flight to Guatemala Saturday. Do you happen to know anyone on our trip?

Have an amazing trip! It's incredible what you'll be able to accomplish in a week, both in terms of building and developing and continuing relationships. I wish I was going with!

Thanks Courtney. I wish you were coming along. I guess I will just have to wait until August. Let me know what you think of the blog over the next week.
