Our final day was spent outside Dublin. We went to Tara Street Dart Station, got a ticket to Dun Laoghaire and walked along Dublin Bay to the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove. Here James Joyce stayed one week and got inspiration for his novel Ulysses, probably the second-most difficult book I ever tried to read (the other one is called Finnigan's wake). Claudia has a friend who pretends the novel is really not so difficult, but anybody who tries to read the last 3 or 4 chapters will be in for a real surprise :)
The James Joyce Tower is one of the 15 so-called Martello Towers, which were built in 1804 as a defense against Napoleon.
Below the tower is Forty Foot Pool, a place between the rocks where naked men where allowed to swim in the 19th and early 20th Century. We were lucky to see one crazy guy going for a swim in the freezing water (not naked however).
From Sandycove you can see all the way to Howth and Ireland's Eye, an island famous for its bird colony.
We walked all the way to Killiney, and something that one person described as a 'good half an hour walk' took us almost 2 hours. But we stopped a lot to look at the beautiful views, the castles, and the enormous villas along the bay. This is where the rich live :)
We had a sandwich in a little cafe and visited a nice little bookshop. Finally reached Killiney where we took the Dart back to Dublin. A couple of hours later we were on the plane to Belgium and arrived again too early...thanks Ryanair :)
